The town of Tring has a long association with the Rothschild family, one of whom, Walter, established a zoological museum in Tring in 1892. Walter, who became Baron Rothschild on the death of his father in 1915, also had a menagerie of exotic animals including zebras trained to draw a carriage. Much of Walter's collection is still in Tring and is now part of the Natural History Museum.
